DIGITAL NEWS: (Lecture) News Packages

Feedback about mock news package:

Too much info when the package starts - cut to interview quicker - let interviewee give information

Brief all contributors

Stick with shots for longer

News Packages:

News packages are self contained items - the news anchor just introduces and wraps up the piece

Clarify story - interviews, pictures, graphics, PTCs

Structure / script

Accurate / impactful images

Digital news audiences:

Adds detail and depth to story

Platform dictates duration / style

Using the person instead of reporter - audience feels more connected

Add graphics to audio

"what you shoot should drive what you write, and how you write should drive your editing"

Use script as template for structuring and guiding edit

Structure:
- intro
- body of argument (expert opinion, stats, background info etc)
- conclusion

Consider storytelling:
- style
- storytelling devices and motifs
- how you will introduce the key themes, characters and locations
- engage the audience - make them want to know more
- entertain as well as inform

Shoot action - people / animated beings in them
Let the action happen - camera moves best for framing prior to recording
Set up sequences
Close ups are best - 40% - 50% should be close ups - 30 second voice over needs 7-8 shots (3-4 close ups)
Hold shots
Let subject enter and leave frame
Good coverage

Stages of the edit:
- sync pull - assemble all interview sync back to back
- script vo - record a guide track to lay down for illustration
- rough cut - put in actuality, sequences and GVs
- fine cut

- ensure stories are appropriate to brand and audience
- make sure work out channel brand and audience before ideas
- ideas must be real and genuinely new

- check out other online news content

- focus of story
- locations, contributors
- what will channel be like
- some kind of script
